Be An Expert At Just One Thing!

Many people when they begin their job search tend to try and be a jack of all trades. They don't want to be excluded from any possible opportunities so they aim for as many skill sets as possible. This strategy may seem logical but it can more than likely have the reverse effect. The industry is headed toward niches. We can see this new wave reported in many newspapers and magazines. Niches cater to an untapped market in desperate need or shortage. The same is true of the job market. Because there are so many people unemployed and looking for work, employers can afford to pick only the best. Let's say you are going for a job for a receptionist position. You have a great resume with varied experience at top level companies. Now another person comes along with a resume that lists a history of only receptionist positions with at least four companies. Who do you think the employer would pick? Obviously the one where there is a concentration of the skill set they are looking for. Bottom line is that if you are seen as an expert in your field and target that specific field, your chances are not only good that you'll get the job; but in most cases, you can command a salary of at least 10% to 15% more than what they were willing to pay. So keep this in mind when preparing your resume.

If They Really, Really Want You...Think Twice!

A while back I went to an interview with a major company out in LA. Everything was going well and it seemed like they really liked me. However, things started to take a strange turn. What I mean by this is that things went from good to great. So you're probably wondering what's wrong with that. It seemed as if they were making a sales pitch telling me not only how great I was but what a wonderful company they were. Now as a recruiter I am very confident in my abilities. But at the same time I am realistic so I know my strenghts and limitations. I began to feel uncomfortable with how aggressive they were. Right away a red flag went up. At that point I went into my questioning mode which is very important when being interviewed by a prospective employer. After an intense line of questioning and probing I gathered that they really wanted me for their sales division. Prior to the meeting I specifially told them that I was not interested in sales. However, they heard through their sources that I was great at it and figured they could somehow convince me to work with them. To make a long story short I turned down the position even with the high salary they were offering. It just wasn't what I wanted to do. So if they go out of their way to try and impress you, stop and think for a moment. Maybe there are things you need to know before accepting their offer. And don't forget that in addition to being interviewed you are also interviewing them as well! Ask intelligent questions, get more information before you make any decisions. It could save you from making a terrible mistake

Can't get your foot in the door? Try the Back Door Technique!

Let’s say you’ve targeted a company that you’d really like to work for. You’ve gone through the process of sending your resume to both the hiring manager and the Human Resources department. Now, after all your work you are told that there are no positions available but they’ll keep your resume on file. What do you do? You’ve heard through your network that XYZ Corporation is a really great company to work for yet you just can’t get your foot in the door. One strategy that you might want to try is the Back Door approach. Contact the Human Resources department at XYZ and ask them what temp agencies they have accounts with. They should have no problem providing you with that information. Then call those agencies and ask them if you can go in and sign up with them. Once you get there and get registered, tell the recruiter that you are only interested in working for XYZ Corporation. Ask them if they can set you up with a temp position there. Most of the time the recruiter will be happy to accommodate you and if you are patient you might just land a job. Most companies that aren't hiring use temporary employees. Since the permanent staff can often call out sick or go on maternity leave this presents the perfect opportunity for you. And it is not uncommon for a temp to go perm within a few months. This technique has proved very successful on getting people into the door. However, be careful. The recruiter may ask you if you are willing to consider working for other companies besides XYZ Corporation. If you say yes, then you may find yourself working with a company other than the one you intended
